The Thirteenth National Black Writers Conference, “Writing Race; Embracing Difference” places the issues of race and difference at the forefront of the literature produced by Black writers.
Through dynamic and spirited panel discussions, roundtables, readings, film, workshops, and performances, writers, scholars, literary professionals, students and the general public will gather over four days to read Black literary texts, to discuss the state of Black literature, and to raise questions related to (a) how and whether Black writers write texts with the acknowledgement that they are writing out of a space that is socially constructed by race, and (b) the ways in which Black writers embrace difference in aesthetics, thought, beliefs, politics, religions, etc. in the texts they compose.
In partnership with the Department of English at Medgar Evers College, the 2016 National Black Writers Conference will also include…presentations on conference honorees a Youth Day Program coordinated by Just Us Books the Elders Writing Program on Thursday, March 31
Poetry Café at Brooklyn Public Library on March 31 the National Black Writers Conference Film Series on Friday, April 1, presented by African Voices/Reel Sisters and much, much more.

The year 2016 marks the centennial of the birth of John Oliver Killens. To honor this literary champion, the Center for Black Literature, The Harlem Writers Guild, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture will celebrate Killens’s legacy.
“John Oliver Killens at 100” is a pre-conference event to the 13th National Black Writers Conference, and the program will include a reflection on Killens’s life, a discussion on the significance of his works, and dramatic presentations with special guests Malaika Adero, Arthur Flowers, Woodie King Jr., Bernice McFadden, Diane Richards, and Ted Wilson among others who align themselves with Killens’s politics and purpose.
