MadeGood granola bars are being recalled due to potential metal contamination which is a new consumer concern. Millions of these best-selling snack bars are being taken off the shelves of major grocery stores and the safety of food is again put into serious question.
Why was this so?
Originally, Riverside Natural Foods, Inc., the maker of the MadeGood granola bars, initiated a voluntary recall of 2.4 million cases in December 2024. Things started going down the hill from that point and FDA has classified it as a Class II recall, meaning consumption of the contaminated granola bars would lead to “adverse health effects.”
Some batches of the granola bars were contaminated by metal shards, which were discovered and reported by some consumers between January and November 2024. Though fortunately no injuries have been ruled to occur from ingestion, experts state ingestion of these metals could result in very severe side effects, including bodily injury to the gastrointestinal tract, and possible damage to internal organs.

Which Granola Bars Are Recalled?
Consumers can look into their pantries for the following varieties of MadeGood granola bars being included in the recall:
- Chocolate Chip
- Strawberry
- Mixed Berry
- Cookies & Crème.
Those who have bought the bars recently from Target, Whole Foods, Amazon, or other stores are now advised to cease their use immediately.
MadeGood requests consumers take the affected granola bars back to the original store of purchase, where refunds and disposal of the contaminated product will be handled. MadeGood added that the issue has been identified and corrected so as to ensure no future batches are subjected to this contamination.
Why Metal Contamination is a Great Problem
Metal contamination not only presents hazardous value to the food item but poses a special threat to health as well. Some of the injuries that may be caused by tiny fragments of metal include: lacerations of the mouth and throat; damage to the esophagus or digestive tract; and possible infection if lodged in a soft tissue site.
Any one who comes across MadeGood granola bars is being asked by the FDA to keenly take note of this signs and report the doctors if things get serious.
Other Recent Food Recalls
Other than granola bars many recalls occurred in the preceding months. These recalls were for canned tuna, especially Sam’s Club and Walmart private brands. Dunkin’s products also faced a recall of over 2 million of their donuts due to listeria.
Frozen broccoli was recalled in 20 states due to lethal bacteria. Popular chocolate bars had to be withdrawn from the shelf due to allergen concerns.
Food Safety Updates
Recalls happen constantly, and it is very vital to be on the alert with food safety warnings. FDA press releases or notifications by retailers that alert consumers to unsafe and possibly lethal products. It would be advisable to take proactive action regarding those affected by the MadeGood granola bars recall. Checking for granola bars in your pantry and returning all contaminated products will keep you safe. Keep following the FDA’s official website for any other future alerts concerning food safety
