New York, NY – The Center for Law and Social Justice (CLSJ) at Medgar Evers College is proud to announce that Executive Director Lurie Daniel Favors, Esq., has been appointed by Speaker Carl Heastie to the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies. This pivotal commission is tasked with examining the enduring legacy of slavery and its ongoing impact on Black New Yorkers today.

The formation of the Commission, a direct result of Legislation S.1163A/A.7691, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in December 2023, marks a historic step towards addressing the deep-rooted injustices and systemic racism that stem from slavery. This initiative reflects New York’s commitment to acknowledging its past and rectifying long-standing racial and economic disparities.

Lurie Daniel Favors, a dedicated advocate for racial and social justice, brings her vast experience as an author, attorney, and activist to the Commission. With a JD from New York University and a BA in African and African American Studies from Pennsylvania State University, Ms. Daniel Favors is exceptionally qualified to contribute to this critical work. Her leadership at CLSJ and her voice on the Lurie Daniel Favors Show on Sirius XM’s Urban View Network have been instrumental in advancing discussions on race, gender, culture, politics, and the law.

Reflecting on her appointment, Ms. Daniel Favors said, “It is an honor to serve on this Commission, which represents a monumental step towards healing and justice for the Black community in New York. The legacy of slavery is a painful truth that continues to affect our society, and it is imperative that we confront this past with courage and determination. I am committed to working tirelessly with my fellow commissioners to lay the groundwork for meaningful reparations and forge a more equitable and just future for all New Yorkers.”
