All Hail the Queen…of tennis, that is. Serena Williams’ journey along the grass courts of Wimbledon were not drama free. A few matches were more tightly contested than others. In the end, even big sister Venus couldn’t deny Serena’s trip to centre court–another grand slam…number 21….in hand!
Accolades given to men’s champion Novak Djokovic are well deserved. After all, he is on the verge of being the LeBron James of Wimbledon Finals….3 straight appearances and 2 back to back wins!!
As the tennis season nears an end….drama is precisely the way to describe the stage that has been set. Having secured all three major championships thus far this year, it is a foregone conclusion Ms. Williams has visions of rewriting history in her head….a win at the US Open in September will be the first time a Grand Slam has been captured since 1988. While it will not be an easy feat….if anyone is up to the challenge, it is Serena.
On a side note….because social media has such a strong presence in today’s society, it is difficult not to come across negativity, even in times of celebration. I can only chuckle at the trolls who make disparaging remarks about Serena’s..umm assets. As long as the cosmetic industry rakes in billions based on women paying to get what Serena was born with….I will continue to chuckle!
Back stateside, baseball reached the midway point, marked by its annual All-Star Game and festivities. Cincinnati 3rd Baseman Todd Frazier was feeling himself and the energy of the crowd as he thrilled hometown Reds fans with the Homerun Derby win. I still can’t help but shake my head at all the chatter surrounding whether or not the league should do away with the Derby entirely….but mum seems to be the word when it comes to home field advantage in the World Series being decided by the winner of the All-Star Game…total insanity. What else is insane? Sending out the boobirds for your hometown guy. Booing Andy Dalton at the Celebrity Softball game doesn’t exactly instill confidence in your qb a mere few weeks ahead of preseason.
On a much higher note….a name change may be in order for Angels outfielder Mike Trout…after being named the first ever back to back All-Star MVP, Mr. July might be more appropriate!
All eyes were back on the other side of the pond as golfer Jordan Speith, in hot pursuit of a Grand Slam, remained in contention throughout the rain and wind delays that kept the last round of the British Open a secret. As Jordan continues to excel beyond his years and Tiger continues to struggle, the background noise of Speith becoming “The Next” gets louder and louder. The young man is a great talent! However, until he wins roughly a dozen more majors and golf courses are altered due to his game, like one Tiger Woods, I don’t expect the needle to move with non golf fans becoming smitten with the game all of a sudden…just saying. In the end, congrats are in order for fellow American Zack Johnson for taking home the Claret Jug!
In Girl Power news….although the San Antonio Spurs were runners-up in the NBA’s Summer League Championship…it was the first time a team had a female head coach….well done Coach Becky Hammon well done!!
