Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi, an ardent critic of Kenyan President William Ruto, has announce that he will run for the presidency in August, 2027. Mwangi has a history of speaking out against human rights abuses inside Kenya, and abroad.

Mwangi, is a prominent voice among youths, who protested against the Ruto government, particularly over the last two years, including during the anti-tax protests of 2024.
On Wednesday, Mwangi, 42, who had previously unsuccessfully run for parliament, on an anti-corruption platform, announced his bid to for the presidency, saying, “Our leadership has failed us in numerous ways. You pay taxes expecting service, or you’re supposed to pay bribes to get that same service. So as we stand here, our country must be taken back into our hands.”
Mwangi has endured political and legal troubles in recent months.
Mwangi alleges that he was tortured after being abducted by Ruto’s government security agents last May. And, this past June, Mwangi sued the Ruto government, as well as the governments of Uganda and Tanzania, in the East African Court and the International Criminal Court.
In May, Mwangi was expelled from Tanzania, during his observation of a treason trial against Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, of the Chadema Party, who had called for electoral reforms in Tanzania. Mwangi was also charged by a Tanzanian court for possession of a shotgun and teargas canister. Reportedly he called the prosecution “a big shame.”
Mwangi’s presidential candidacy must be approved by Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. Other candidates vying for Kenya’s 2027 Presidential Election include: incumbent President William Ruto, Senator Okiya Omtatah, and former Chief Justice David Maraga.
