Kenya: Watchdog Group Blames Protest Deaths On “Disproportionate Force” By Police

Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority has blamed Kenya’s police for most of the 65 reported deaths from recent protests that have gripped the East African country.

The protests have revolved largely around two issues: anger over government policies and–police brutality.

On July 7th alone 41 people were killed.

President William Ruto has instructed police to shoot protesters, who were targeting businesses, in the leg. Ruto explained his reasoning here by saying “Anyone caught burning another person’s business or property should be shot in the leg, hospitalized, and later taken to court. Don’t kill them, but ensure their legs are broken.”

Human rights groups have denounced the Ruto government’s response to the protests arguing that deadly force against demonstrators is being encouraged.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority stated that during the protests there have been “significant breaches of constitutional policing standards, including use of disproportionate force, lack of professionalism, and failure to uphold public safety and rights.”
