In Kenya, negotiation talks are underway to strengthen their freight infrastructure with UAE railway company Etihad Rail.

A possible deal between Kenya and Etihad Rail revolves around extending the China- built Standard Gauge Railway—a $5 billion infrastructure project to connect regional economic areas. It is also expected to increase trade with Uganda and the Great Lakes region. Etihad Rail is said to be backed by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund.
Reportedly, Saqqaf Alattas, Acting Director of International Relations for Etihad Rail, said the partnership can be mutually beneficial for both nations providing a more reliable rail system for Kenya, and would also foster reciprocal transfer of knowledge between UAE and Kenya. The cooperative effort builds on an agreement that was signed last May between Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) and Etihad Rail.
Etihad Rail is almost finished completion of a rail network in the UAE for passengers and freight. They are also working on a cross-border railway to connect the coast of Oman to Abu Dhabi. Etihad Rail has been seeking other projects outside of the UAE and recently signed a $2.3 billion deal last year with Jordan.
