On November 27th, drummer/producer extraordinaire Karriem Riggins (above) and hip-hop multi-instrumentalist Madlib will release Pardon My French, their debut album as Jahari Massamba Unit.

Listen to the first single “Les Jardins Esméraldins” HERE.

Among all of the projects Madlib presented as part of his Jazz Universe, his work with Riggins was of particular note to fans, who wondered for years if anything else might come from the collaboration. This album, created by students of jazz in its myriad forms, reflects a lifetime of record collecting, musical study, woodshopping, and a reverential respect for one another’s craft.

“This is our Hymn meditation,” Riggins says. “This is the music for Love. This is the music from our souls. Working with Madlib is one of the greatest collaborations I’ve been a part of. We are both forever students of the music and that leaves infinite room for innovation. Pardon My French is one installment of many to come.”

Besides their work together as Jahari Massamba Unit, Madlib and Karriem Riggins have collaborated on Madlib’s 2007 album Yesterdays Universe and together as Supreme Team.

Riggins is also known for his work with Slum Village, Erykah Badu, J Dilla, The Roots, Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Earl Sweatshirt, Diana Krall, Roy Hargrove, Esperanza Spalding, and Common, first collaborating with him on Common’s 1997 album One Day It’ll All Make Sense. In more recent years, Karriem produced Common’s new album A Beautiful Revolution Pt 1, and worked with him alongside Robert Glasper as members of the supergroup August Greene.
