New York, NY (October 20, 2025)— In November, Jazz at Lincoln Center invites audiences to experience the spiritual and rhythmic lineage that is at the heart of the organization’s Mother Africa season, with three powerful performances in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, also known as The House of Swing.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis tours select American cities including a residency at Lied Center of Kansas to premiere Wave the Wheat, a suite featuring commissioned works by each orchestra member.

From the percussive universe of Cyro Baptista at 75: A Banquet for the Spirits, through the blues infused pathways of Steve Miller, to the emergence of Negro spirituals in Journey Through Jazz: The Mighty Negro Spirituals, this trio of concerts bring to life the pulse of Africa through tradition, innovation, and transcendence.

Throughout the month, listeners will experience how the cadences of drum, voice, call-and-response, and spiritual resolve became foundational to the evolution of jazz.

Cyro Baptista at 75: A Banquet for the Spirits (Nov. 7-8) and Steve Miller (Nov. 14-15) take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater at 7:30 p.m. ET and Journey Through Jazz: The Mighty Negro Spirituals takes place in the Appel Room on Nov. 21 at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. and on Nov. 22 at 4:30 and 7:00 p.m.

Cyro Baptista at 75: A Banquet for the Spirits
On Nov. 7-8, São Paulo-born percussion wizard Cyro Baptista, returns to the Rose Theater stage for his 75th birthday celebration alongside special guests from across his renowned career including Trey Anastasio of Phish (Nov. 7 only), vocalist Cassandra Wilson (Nov. 8 only), Hassan Hakmoun, Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, Jason Fratticelli, John Lee, Felipe Hostins, Carlos Eduardo da Costa, Zé Luis, John Altieri, Junior Karegato, Scott Kettner, Brian Marsella (Nov. 8 only) and dancers Max Pollak and Chikako Iwahori.

Journey Through Jazz
Now in its fifth year, the acclaimed Journey Through Jazz series continues on Nov. 21–22 with The Mighty Negro Spirituals, a powerful musical exploration led by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Marcus Printup. This season’s program delves into the profound impact of Negro spirituals including songs born from the lived experiences of enslaved Africans in America and their foundational role in the evolution of jazz and gospel music. Rooted in faith, resilience, and the yearning for freedom, these spirituals often carried coded messages of escape and deliverance. Their distinctive musical characteristics comprised of call-and-response structures, pentatonic scales, and complex rhythmic patterns became cornerstones of the jazz and gospel traditions that followed.

Music director Marcus Printup, who grew up immersed in the gospel music of his church in Conyers, Georgia, brings a personal connection to this rich musical heritage. His unique perspective will guide audiences on an immersive journey that celebrates the enduring legacy of spirituals and their profound influence on the evolution of American music.
