Jamaal Bowman, the Democratic nominee and likely next member of Congress in NY-16, today announced that he is endorsing fellow progressive and fellow Justice Democrat Cori Bush for Congress in Missouri’s First District.
Facing off against 20-year incumbent Rep. Lacy Clay in the Democratic primary on August 4, Cori Bush is Jamaal’s first endorsement since he was officially declared the winner in NY-16 on Friday. Last month, Jamaal endorsed Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse, a progressive taking on a 32-year incumbent in MA-1.
Cori Bush is a nurse, single mother, ordained pastor and Ferguson-made community activist who was born, raised, and educated in the district. Like Jamaal’s campaign to unseat a 31-year incumbent, Cori also started off as an underdog, but has been gaining support and momentum as St. Louisans demand change as they face a deadly pandemic alongside deadly police violence. Missouri’s first congressional district includes St. Louis City and County, including Ferguson, and has been an epicenter of the Black Lives Matter movement.
“As a lifelong St. Louisan, Cori Bush understands the struggles facing her communities, because she’s lived them herself. She’s a nurse, an activist, and a single mother — and we need more voices like hers in Congress,” said Jamaal Bowman. “Cori was a leading voice in the Ferguson uprising that sparked the movement we’re seeing today. She will fight to confront racist and reckless policing for her communities, and I’m proud to support her grassroots campaign. Four weeks ago, we took on entrenched power and wealthy interests in New York and won — and on August 4, Cori Bush is going to do the same thing in St. Louis.”
“For too long, those in power have failed to meaningfully represent their constituents. Jamaal Bowman’s decisive victory in New York shows the power there is in running as candidates who are deeply rooted in our communities,” said Cori Bush. “I’m so proud to have Jamaal’s endorsement and to stand shoulder to shoulder with him on a platform that will transform life for the regular, working people of our districts and all over the country. From St. Louis to New York City, our communities have lived through generations of struggle, and now it’s our time to build a better future that works for us all. It’s our time to make history.”
