The so-called “Ivy League Killer” has been given 30-years-to-life for murdering his hedge fund father over a decrease in his weekly allowance.
Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., yesterday announced the sentencing of THOMAS GILBERT, JR., 35, to 30 years-to-life in prison for fatally shooting his 70-year-old father, Thomas Gilbert, Sr. inside his parents’ Midtown Manhattan apartment–after a dispute over allowance money.
On June 28, 2019, a New York State Supreme Court jury found the defendant guilty of Murder in the Second Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. Gilbert Jr., a graduate of Princeton University, was dubbed the “Ivy League Killer,” for killing his hedge fund manager father, who had decreased his son’s weekly allotted allowance.
Vance called the killing “cold-blooded.”

Shelley Gilbert, the defendant’s mother and wife of the victim, said she plans to appeal the sentence. She had requested her son “be given as light a sentence as possible.” She claims her son wouldn’t have killed her husband if he wasn’t so “sick.”
“As I’ve said many times in court, we’ve been trying to get Tommy into a hospital for 15 years,” said Mrs. Gilbert. “He’s too sick to be able to judge. He needs to be in a hospital, had he been so my husband would still be alive.”
