The Council on American‑Islamic Relations (CAIR) today condemned threats targeting multiple Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), which have prompted multiple campuses to go into lockdown, shelter‑in‑place, or cancel nonessential activities.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR also called for stepped-up security for those institutions and for swift apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators.
According to news reports, at least six HBCUs — including Alabama State University, Virginia State University, Hampton University, Southern University in Louisiana, and Clark Atlanta University — were forced to halt classes or cancel events amid threats. Spelman College instituted precautionary shelter‑in‑place protocols due to its proximity to affected institutions.

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“These threats represent yet another instance of targeted intimidation of Black educational institutions. Such actions are unacceptable, dangerous and must be met with swift and decisive action by law enforcement authorities. We urge stepped-up security measures by and for these important institutions and for the swift apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators.”
He said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
