San Diego author Paul L. Woodring, writer of the novel Inventions (ISBN: 0-9786107-6-8), will appear for a book reading and signing at Hue-Man Bookstore and Cafe, located at 2319 Frederick Douglass Blvd., New York, NY, 10027, on Friday, January 25, 2008, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Inventions tells the story of Robert Watson, Jr., an intelligent, educated and hard-working African-American. When he perceives that he will never be more than the token Black employee in predominantly white business corporations, he sets out to establish his own company and winds up creating an industry.
It is a story of one man’s search for identity, for the place he truly belongs and a love that will make him whole. “This book is loosely based on my experience of trying to create a ‘Camelot’ by establishing my own company,” says Woodring, who is a consultant for the medical device industry. Prior to forming his own company, Woodring worked in numerous management capacities for a company specializing in life support ventilation. Under his direction, the first successful microprocessor-controlled life support ventilator was designed and commercialized, going on to become the most used ventilator in the U.S.
“On paper, most American companies are committed to diversity,” says Woodring. “The reality is that when it comes to opportunities for advancement and salary increases, African-Americans still lag far behind whites.”
