Jamaica, NY — Council Member Nantasha Williams proudly hosted the first annual “Let’s Go Green Celebration” at Roy Wilkins Park in Jamaica, Queens, in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, NYS Senator Leroy Comrie, and Assembly Member Alicia Hyndman. The event took place on Saturday August 25th, bringing together over a hundred community members, environmental enthusiasts, and advocates for a day filled with education, engagement, and fun.

The “Let’s Go Green Celebration” aimed to raise awareness about sustainable living practices and environmental stewardship while fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Attendees of all ages had the opportunity to learn about various green initiatives, including planting, sustainability, resiliency, upcycling, recycling, and tree care.

Council Member Williams expressed her enthusiasm for the event, stating, “The ‘Let’s Go Green Celebration’ is a testament to our commitment to environmental conservation and community empowerment. By coming together to learn and engage in sustainable practices, we can create a greener, healthier future for generations to come.”

“Our public parks are vital spaces where neighbors can build community, enjoy the great outdoors, and learn more about our natural environment. That’s why we’re so happy to partner on events like Let’s Go Green to promote sustainability and foster connection between New Yorkers,” said NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jackie Langsam. “I’m grateful to Councilmember Nantasha Williams for her wonderful partnership, and we encourage all New Yorkers to get out to their local parks this summer and connect with both neighbors and nature!”

“Let’s Go Green was an incredible program that brought people together in our community to learn about and take action toward a more sustainable future. I consider it an honor to be a part of something that supports protecting and beautifying our environment,” Senator Leroy Comrie declared. “As our youth planted seeds with the NYC Parks Department, they were able to learn life lessons about what a difference even seemingly small acts can make. Thank you to all parties who came together in ensuring that we Go Green!”

“As NYS moves towards its climate goals we must all do our part.  I am happy to partner on the ‘Let’s Go Green Celebration’ that will encourage all ages on what they can do to sustain our communities through recycling, composting and much much more.” said Assembly Member Alicia Hyndman.

The event featured informative sessions led by climate change speakers, who shared valuable insights and actionable steps to combat environmental challenges. Additionally, attendees enjoyed live music, engaging activities for children, and opportunities to connect with local organizations and green initiatives.

“People need to be more enlightened on events like this. People need to know more about the environment. What about your children and grandchildren?” said Robert Rankins, a 76 year-old veteran who attended the event.

Ajani Steller, a high school student and the event’s keynote speaker who created the organization ‘Kids Fight Climate Change’ said, “When we encourage other people to take action, it’s making the solution easy. This event is making the solution easy. We must focus on action” The inspiration to start his activism came from his 5th grade teacher that first introduced him to caring for the environment.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the distribution of free rain barrels, provided by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, to encourage rainwater collection for lawn irrigation and water conservation efforts. By promoting the use of rain barrels, the event aimed to empower residents to take proactive steps towards reducing water consumption and mitigating the effects of climate change.
