‘Imported’ Documentary Addresses American Basketball Players Who Find Success Abroad

By Black Star News

Wednesday, the leading Black content studio, Andscape, announced the premiere of the documentary IMPORTED, which will be debuting on Hulu and Hulu on Disney Plus on August 28.

The documentary, directed by Fiz Olajide, tells the story of American basketball players who “discover purpose, growth, and global fandom on courts around the world,” after experiencing failure pursuing careers in the NBA and WNBA.

‘Imported’ follows these male and female ballplayers who instead find success playing professionally on international courts far away from the NBA and WNBA courts in America. They are seen “Immersing themselves in foreign cultures while discovering the intense and exhilarating global fandom for basketball, these athletes turn an unwanted detour into a transformative and fulfilling chapter in the pursuit of their dreams.”

The documentary “is produced by Marginal MediaWorks’ Sanjay M. Sharma and Milan Chakraborty, and Improbable Media’s Jay Williams and Jonathan E. Stern. The film marks Marginal’s continued expansion into documentary features and its first sports doc, right off the heels of its buzzy Tribeca music doc “The Rose: Come Back To Me.”

Some of the athletes featured in ‘Imported’ are “James Gist, Edgar Sosa, Lindsey Pulliam, as well as Mike Creppy, Jr. himself, who also produced and whose real-life journeys illuminate the challenges and triumphs of finding success beyond the NBA. The film is Executive Produced by Andscape’s Jason Aidoo and Dwayne Bray.”

The filmmakers say that “IMPORTED continues Andscape’s commitment to telling culturally resonant, human-centered stories through its acclaimed &360 series, offering a powerful look at sport, identity, and the transformative power of reinvention. Previous Andscape titles in the &360 anthology series include HIP HOP AND THE WHITE HOUSE, and BREAKIN’ ON THE ONE.”
