Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on news that Steve Bannon and others – who had their own border wall built by Fisher Sand and Gravel – have been charged with embezzling public donations:

“It is not surprising that Steve Bannon and others building their own border wall have been charged with embezzling public donations. There is simply not enough oversight of these types of construction projects on private land. Despite the President’s recent insistence that he doesn’t support privately funded projects, his own agency leading the effort—U.S. Customs and Border Protection—released a list of places for those with private financing to build earlier this year.

“Even more suspect is that the company that helped build the disastrous ‘We Build the Wall’ fence, Fisher Sand and Gravel, is the same company President Trump is constantly endorsing. Administration DHS officials have also touted the company and have not shied away from photo-ops with the infamous fence. Since this company has received billions in Federal contracts and is currently under investigation by the DoD Inspector General, it is imperative that the U.S. Attorney’s Office also look into whether there was any further impropriety.”
