Across New York City, educators are searching for meaningful ways to engage students, strengthen emotional intelligence, and build school communities rooted in empathy and resilience. One program is meeting that moment with energy, culture, and proven impact: the Hip-Hop Harmony Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Program.

Launching its expanded rollout in September 2026, Hip-Hop Harmony is already making a powerful difference in classrooms serving students from Grades 1 through 12. As an approved NYC Department of Education vendor, the program blends the universal language of hip-hop with evidence-based SEL practices to help students develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, confidence, and interpersonal skills.
The program is grounded in the restorative circles model, creating safe, structured spaces where students can express themselves, listen to one another, and work through challenges collectively. Hip-Hop Harmony also draws on the core principles of hip-hop culture, using rap or spoken word, break dancing or movement, graffiti or visual arts, deejaying or curating music, and knowledge of self or self-awareness as tools for personal development, conflict resolution, and critical thinking. These elements work together to help students build stronger relationships and create a more harmonious environment both in school and at home.
Currently, Hip-Hop Harmony is successfully operating in Brownsville Collaborative Middle School (I.S. 363) and Mott Hall Bridges Academy (M.S. 671) in Brownsville, Brooklyn, as well as Rockaway Park High School and P.S. 201 The Discovery School in Queens, New York. In each of these school communities, students are not just learning. They are expressing themselves, building connections, and discovering their voices in ways that traditional approaches often fail to reach.

What sets Hip-Hop Harmony apart is its culturally responsive framework. By integrating music, lyricism, movement, and storytelling, the program meets students where they are while guiding them toward where they can be. Classrooms become creative spaces where young people feel seen and heard, fostering a sense of belonging that is essential for both academic and personal success.
Educators have reported noticeable improvements in student engagement, behavior, and peer relationships. The program’s structure allows it to seamlessly complement academic goals, making it especially valuable for schools focused on innovation and interdisciplinary learning.
STEAM schools, in particular, are strongly encouraged to bring Hip-Hop Harmony into their buildings. By pairing science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics with social-emotional development, schools can create a more holistic educational experience, one that prepares students not just for exams, but for life.

As schools continue to address the social and emotional needs of students in a rapidly changing world, programs like Hip-Hop Harmony are not just beneficial. They are essential.
School leaders, principals, and administrators are invited to schedule a free consultation to learn how this highly successful SEL program can be customized for their school community.
