Gwen Carr being led away in cuffs by police
The mother of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who died from a chokehold by police in July 2014, was arrested last night by police after she and other members of Sharpton’s National Action Network protested outside of Trump Tower.
The protest was one of many held in civil disobedience against Donald Trump’s recent Supreme Court nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy left after Justice Antonin Scalia’s death last year.
Carr, a consistent activist since the death of her son, was led away by NYPD officers with her hands strapped into zip ties as crowds angrily gathered to mock Trump’s nominee.
Several other protesters were arrested and taken into custody along with Carr. Charges are pending, according to a police spokesman.
“I came out here to be arrested,” said one protester outside Trump Tower. “And I’ll continue to be arrested to have our voice heard against Trump. We’re not going away.”
