Ghana and Rwanda are moving towards establishing the first small modular nuclear reactors on the African continent. Presently, South Africa is the only African nation with its own nuclear power plants.

Sama Bilbao y León, the director general of the World Nuclear Association, in a interview with Semafor Africa, spoke about what is needed to grow nuclear power facilities in Africa.

“We are going to need money, we are going to need supply chains, we are going to need work force, we are going to need many things to develop nuclear…But the number one thing that we need is visionary leadership that knows, that has a plan, and moves forward.”

León pointed out that Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame said his government was “very focused on nuclear.” However, León said that “Ghana is really a little bit ahead of everybody else.”

Importantly, the nuclear physicist stated that African nations did not “want to just be a customer and wait for somebody to bring the technology to Africa.” She continued, “There is a lot of interest in making sure that Africa does profit as much as possible from all the resources that exist in Africa, including uranium…not just shipping the raw material elsewhere, but actually processing it as much as possible in Africa.”
