The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) are both condemning Israel’s Monday morning bombing strikes that killed twenty people—and five more journalists. The killings follow the pattern of Israel’s targeting of journalists for assassination.

CPJ reported that “Journalist Hussam Al-Masri, a Reuters contractor; Al Jazeera camera operator Mohammed Salama; Mariam Abu Dagga, freelance photojournalist with Independent Arabia and the Associated Press; and freelance video journalist Moaz Abu Taha, were among at least15 people killed in two Israeli strikes on the Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, on Monday morning. Al-Masri was killed in the first strike, while the others were killed while covering the aftermath of the previous Israeli strike. Journalist Jamal Baddah from Palestine Today TV, photographer Hatem Khaled, a Reuters contractor, and Mohammed Fayeq, a freelance photographer, were injured in the attack. CPJ is investigating a possible fifth case of a journalist killed.”

CPJ’s Regional Director Sara Qudah spoke out about the two bombing strikes and the continued killings of journalists.

“Israel killed at least four journalists in Nasser Hospital on Monday morning. Israel’s broadcasted killing of journalists in Gaza continues while the world watches and fails to act firmly on the most horrific attacks the press has ever faced in recent history. These murders must end now. The perpetrators must no longer be allowed to act with impunity.”

RSF Director General Thibaut Bruttin released the following statement: “Four more journalists were killed this Monday morning. How far will the Israeli armed forces go in their gradual effort to eliminate information coming from Gaza? How long will they continue to defy international humanitarian law? The protection of journalists is guaranteed by international law, yet more than 200 of them have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza over the past two years. Ten years after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2222, which protects journalists in times of conflict, the Israeli army is flouting its application. RSF calls for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to ensure this resolution is finally respected, and that concrete measures are taken to end impunity for crimes against journalists, protect Palestinian journalists, and open access to the Gaza Strip to all reporters.”

After publishing that statement, RSF updated their reporting saying that another journalist has died from his injuries.

According to RSF, “A fifth journalist, Ahmed Abu Aziz, working for several local Palestinian media outlets and Tunisian radio station Diwan FM, died from his injuries after being hit by the strikes on the hospital…”

CPJ notes that “Before this strike, CPJ documented 192 journalists killed during the war, 184 of them were Palestinians in Gaza. With Monday’s strike, the toll rises to 196 journalists killed, 188 of them Palestinians killed by Israel in Gaza.”

Editor’s Note: The United Nations has said that (as of August 11, 2025) Israel has killed 242 journalists. However, some sources say the number is closer to 280.
