FRIDAY: Activists To Protest Bill Bratton’s NYPD Appointment By De Blasio

WE SAY NO TO NYC POLICE COMMISSIONER WILLIAM BRATTON! New Yorkers Against Bratton Protests From Harlem To The Bronx

DATE & TIME: Friday, December 27, 2013, 6:00PM

BEGINS: ADAM CLAYTON POWELL STATE BUILDING (HARLEM) Northeast Corner of 125th Street & Adam Clayton Powell Blvd.

ENDS: THE HUB (THE BRONX), 149TH & 3RD Ave.

On Friday, December 27, 2013 at 6:00PM, New Yorkers Against Bratton—an ad hoc group comprised of Parents and Families Against Police Brutality, grassroots organizations, activists, and concerned community members—will lead a rally and march to protest Mayor-elect Bill De Blasio’s appointment of William Bratton as police commissioner of New York City.

Bratton has been widely credited with implementing the “Broken Windows” policing philosophy during his first stint at NYPD commissioner. With Bratton’s guidance, the NYPD began an age of aggressive, “proactive” policing in communities of color that targeted mostly young Black and Latino men for low level crimes perhaps best expressed through it’s Stop and Frisk policy.

Bratton expanded Stop and Frisk while at the LAPD and the Oakland PD’s hiring of him as a consultant sparked public protest, casting doubt that Bratton had or ever will change.

Dozens of New Yorkers were shot and killed during Bratton’s first regime. Many point to Bratton’s introduction of semiautomatic 9mm guns to the NYPD as a cause.

We are committed to opposing Bratton’s return as NYPD Commissioner. We ask that the Mayor-elect rescind his appointment immediately and work with the community in selecting a commissioner that will signify a break from the past–not a continuation of it.
