(WASHINGTON, D.C, 2/13/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on federal law enforcement authorities to investigate an incident in North Carolina in which a man died in police custody.
Six police officers in Raleigh, N.C., are on administrative leave after a man died in their custody last month. Newly-released videos show police scuffling with Darryl Tyree Williams, 32, in January. Williams was tased multiple times by police officers and is heard saying he has “heart problems” as he begged for officers to stop. He died in a Raleigh hospital on January 17.

“We extend our condolences to the family of Darryl Tyree Williams,” said CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell. “Given a nationwide pattern of excessive force leading to the deaths of unarmed individuals, we urge federal law enforcement authorities to join the investigation of this incident and to take any appropriate action.”
He noted that CAIR recently called on President Biden to address police violence during his State of the Union address because “interconnected issues of racism, bigotry, and police violence continue to impact the lives of far too many Americans without any real change being made to our nation’s laws.”
