On Saturday, May 29, 2021, the Defund NYPD Coalition is organizing a rally and march to mark the first anniversary of the Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd, to demand that the Mayor and City Council defund the NYPD and reinvest the savings in communities impacted by repressive policing, and to demand justice and accountability for all New York families victimized by members of the NYPD.

The march will begin at 2:00 PM by the site where Delrawn Small was killed (92 Pennsylvania Avenue, Brooklyn) by NYPD officer Wayne Isaacs, and will include speeches from family members of victims of police violence, including Angelique Kearse, Hawa Bah, Donna Heyward, Victor Dempsey, and Joshua Lopez — relatives, respectively, of Andrew Kearse, Mohamed Bah, Nicholas Heyward Jr., Delrawn Small, and John Collado.

The Defund NYPD coalition returns for the 2021-2022 NYC budget season with calls for Mayor DeBlasio and City Council to pursue real public safety by reallocating 50% of the NYPD’s budget to education, healthcare, housing and other community investments proven to support healthy communities.
