For over 44 years, the number of Black males in medicine has been at a stagnant—extremely alarming—rate. Black men only account for 3% of physicians despite the efforts seen by medical schools, the government, and more.
This data alone continues to have significant implications for advancing health equity and patient care. In 2020, the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) and the National Medical Association (NMA) convened an Action Collaborative to address the lack of representation of African American men in medicine and have continued to make strides in addressing this crisis.
Later this week, the AAMC will host a session during the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference that explores the issues at the root of this crisis and systems-based solutions, including changing the narrative to address the dearth of Black men in medicine.
And on October 20-21, the AAMC will be hosting an inaugural strategy summit to drive the development of national strategies and effective practices to increase the number of Black men in medicine.
