An infectious disease named Disease X has spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo since the last week of October. With the death toll up to 79 people, the health officials are determining the cause of the disease. While the disease is said to be airborne, other factors are yet to be identified. To know more about Disease X, its effects, and the outbreak, continue reading.

Rising number of patients from Disease X

Disease X is also known as Pathogen X. In early February 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) added Disease X to the Blueprint list of diseases that required international priority. The disease was also a serious priority under CEPI’s research and development. It is said that after Covid 19, Disease X is the latest disease that follows the same path.

The health officials from Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the disease resembles a flu-like fever. It is observed that out of 376 patients, 200 infected have been identified as children below 5 years of age. The symptoms include high fever, headache, cough, difficulty in breathing as well as anemia. These have been reported since October 4, 2024, in the area of Panzi, a southwestern province of Kwango. The area has been alerted as a health zone since December 1, 2024.

The director of the Centres mentioned that there is already a delay of five to six weeks. During this time, the outbreak may have already accelerated. However, health officials are trying their best to identify the source of the disease through testing. Disease X came at the same time as influenza season, which made it difficult to be identified as a singular health concern too. While the disease is recognized as airborne, there are no other indicators of the outbreak. The director general of the National Public Health Institute has mentioned that the patients are being observed in a separate lab in Kinshaha. This is almost 500 km away from the outbreak area. The results will be shown within 48 hours, and presented by the weekend.

Initiatives from health officials across the world

The CDC has offered health officials the necessary types of equipment, laboratories, and control experts to mitigate the situation at the earliest. The director assured that the nation is equipped to handle the outbreak of such a Disease at a time when airborne diseases are spreading rapidly. However, this new disease has raised concerns about the spread of the pathogen around the countries after the world has just recovered from COVID-19.

A World Health Organization (WHO) representative from Africa informed the BBC that they have already dispatched a team to analyze the disease. While the government has asked the citizens to maintain calm and take precautions, there are also relief teams being sent. People are cautioned to continue the practice of washing hands, maintaining distance, and in crowded places.

Current Cases with Disease X

There have already been fatalities from Disease X. A resident from Congo, mentioned that his wife and 7-year-old daughter have passed away from the disease. Reporting to the Associated Press, the individual mentioned that they were not aware of the gravity of the disease, but now the health officials are cautioning them about an epidemic. Meanwhile, others need urgent care and attention.

Another civil society advocate mentioned about the rising state of Disease X, and how it has severely affected the citizens of Panzi. As the place is a rural health zone, there is a shortage of medicine and healthcare facilities in the area. The President of the Civil Society Consultation Framework of the Kwongo province stated that the local hospital where the patients are currently situated does not have a sufficient supply of healthcare. He specified that since there is a lack of medicines, the patients have been treated with local practitioners. The disease has also affected a nearby place, Katenga. It is observed that the majority of the casualties are children below the age of 5. In a time like this, the healthcare provided to young ones as well as mothers must be up to health standards.
