Dept. Q Netflix Series Review: Crime, Drama & Nordic Depth

The newly released Netflix series “Dept. Q.” is a crime fiction series that is adapted from a novel extract of a Danish writer. The changes in the script according to requirements are implemented by a British writer, Chandni Lakshmi. The series consists of 9 episodes in season 1, but they are enough to keep you on edge. The main lead in the cast is Matthew Goode, who is filming the series in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Matthew Goode is playing the role of Carl Morck, who is the detective solving the cold case in his hands. The series also shows cultural diversity as it includes American drama, British detective fiction, and Nordic fiction. It is a combination of three different locations and their cultural references which makes the series even more interesting and informative.

Characters and the cast performance

Dept. Q revolves around the male lead, Carl Morck, who has his ally, Akram Salim, with whom he investigates and solves criminal cases. In addition to these roles, the main characters are getting support from several other roles, including Kelly Macdonald ( Carl Morck’s therapist), Jamie Sives (an ally who got paralyzed), and Leah Byrne (who is appointed as a new constable).

The series is full with unending drama and little action as most scenes delve into the past lives of the characters. The dialogues are delivered with utmost perfection and depth, especially by Kelly Macdonald and Jamie Sives. However, in some parts of the series, we can identify that the delivery is overly scripted due to absence of direct emotions.

Nordic fiction influence on the series

The series has used Nordic fiction in the series with to-the-point acting. The psychological trauma and the visuals used in the series are heartbreaking and can even make you cry. The use of emotions during investigating is slim as emotions distract the person from the evidences. In addition, the British detective fiction elements are used to even the emotional distress in the series. This leads to a steady growth in the characters of the series for the later parts.

The case typically contains a lot of twists and turns, both in investigation and psychological distress. Every character has a past that has some way or another, contributed to the case. The main character is also shown to have therapy due to emotional bottling up and memories popping up several times in the series.

Conclusion

The series contains a lot of emotional drama and tension. In such cases, having a soft hearted personality will always lead to an emotional outburst after the shoot. But this is not the case with Goode. He has opposite nature than the character he is playing. Thus, he doesn’t get much affected after playing the psychologically traumatic incidents in the series. The actor is open about his emotions than the character which helps him to restrain himself after such scenes.
