Washington D.C.Attorney General Brian Schwalb (above middle) calls Donald Trump’s federalizing of police in the city, and deployment of National Guard troops, “unprecedented, unnecessary, and unlawful.”
Schwalb said Trump’s “crime emergency” claims about D.C. are fictional—since the city is facing 30-year lows in violent crime. Moreover, violent crime dropped by 35 percent between 2023 and 2024.
Under the Home Rule Act, Trump is allowed to federalize the D.C Police for 30 days. To extend it beyond that Trump would need Congressional approval.
Schwald said, “We are considering all of our options and will do what is necessary to protect the rights and safety of District residents.”
In announcing the National Guard takeover, Trump falsely claimed that “Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs and homeless people.”
In a NPR interview, Schwalb stated ‘the president’s statements yesterday are out of touch with the facts on the ground here in the District of Columbia. We have had a record reduction in crime across the city over the last couple of years since I was elected in 2023. Crime has come down consistently over time. And as the Justice Department has announced, we are at 30-year lows with respect to violent crime in our city.’
