Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 – Gritty New Story in Night City

May CD Projekt Red announced that work is underway on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Now at Anime Expo 2025 they’ve officially announced a second season of the Netflix anime spinoff. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will have a brand new story and characters, a grittier and more realistic take on Night City’s criminal underworld.

This season will be directed by Kai Ikarashi who directed episode 6 (“Girl on Fire”) of the first season. No premiere date yet but they did release new poster art and a trailer will debut later tonight during Trigger’s panel at 8:30 PM PT.

During the Friday panel showrunner and writer Bartosz Sztybor said for season one his goal was to make the audience feel sad – admitting that seeing others cry made him a little happy. For this new 10 episode season he said it will be “even sadder” and “darker, bloodier and more unfiltered” than before.

What’s been announced about Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2?

At Anime Expo 2025 the new logo and poster was revealed. Kai Ikarashi will be directing, replacing Hiroyuki Imaishi who directed the first season. This is Ikarashi’s first time directing the series.

Anime Expo 2025 is ongoing and anime fans are having a blast with all the new anime announcements. Well CD Projekt Red just surprised the fandom during the event with the announcement of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2.

What will Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 be about?

Bartosz Sztybor the writer and producer of the series said while David’s story is done Night City still has many stories to tell. He said working again with Trigger is exciting for CD Projekt Red and they will deliver a gritty and authentic story about redemption and revenge, something they haven’t done before.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Officially Announced

At Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED confirmed they’re teaming up with TRIGGER again to produce Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a new standalone anime in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.

Highlights:

  • During the panel the logo and new poster art for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 was revealed along with the announcement that Kai Ikarashi will direct the new season.
  • Panel guests were Hugo Award-winning writer Bartosz Sztybor, director Hiroyuki Imaishi (who directed the first season), voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), and Joey “The Anime Man” Bizinger hosting.
  • The new season is a joint effort between CD PROJEKT RED and the animation studio TRIGGER, will stream on Netflix.
  • The announcement was made at Anime Expo which ran from July 2 to 6 during a livestreamed panel titled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators”. The panel included Bartosz Sztybor, voice cast members, moderator Joey Bizinger and special guest Hiroyuki Imaishi.
  • During the Q&A, the team talked about the original anime, shared production insights and behind-the-scenes stories. Sztybor confirmed the collaboration with TRIGGER to do Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. He and Imaishi also showed the new season’s logo and poster.

Imaishi also handed over the director’s chair to Kai Ikarashi (who worked on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and SSSS.Gridman) who will be directing the second season. Ikarashi appeared via video and shared a Director’s Voice, talking about his vision and approach for the new anime.
