The following is a Tuesday press release from the office of Council Member Dr. Nantasha Williams on the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan.

“Today I joined Chair Riley before the City Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises at the Council hearing on the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan, a major rezoning and investment initiative two years in the making. Alongside Speaker Adrienne Adams, and community members, we pressed for accountability and concrete commitments to ensure the plan delivers real housing, infrastructure, schools, parks, cultural institutions, and economic opportunities for Southeast Queens.

“This hearing comes as several November 2025 ballot proposals threaten to weaken the Council’s authority over land use, shifting power to mayoral appointees and new boards. Today’s transparent, community-driven process stands in direct contrast to these proposals, which would silence neighborhood voices and diminish accountability.

“Today’s hearing is proof of what it means to center community voices in city planning.  For two years, we’ve engaged residents, small businesses, faith leaders, and young people to shape a vision for Jamaica that delivers housing, jobs, infrastructure, and cultural spaces worthy of this community. As the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan now advances toward a full City Council vote. I remain committed to a process that balances growth with accountability and delivers lasting, tangible benefits to Southeast Queens.”
