WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07) issued the following statement Friday regarding the likely federal government shutdown on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at 12:01 a.m. E.T.
“We are days away from a federal government shutdown, solely because of Republican infighting. Speaker McCarthy stood at the White House with President Biden and announced in May that he was working to find common ground. Since then, the Speaker and the extreme elements of the Republican Party have deserted this commitment and thrown innocent, hardworking Americans under the bus. Their recklessness now threatens our national security, food assistance programs for millions of American families and children, food safety, small businesses, military and law enforcement pay. These cuts are particularly cruel to Baltimoreans and Marylanders who expect more from their federal government.
“A federal government shutdown in the coming days would mark the sixth instance in a row where Republicans were in control of the U.S. House of Representatives at the time. Democrats remain prepared to work with our colleagues across the aisle on a resolution, but the extreme elements of the Republican Majority want to see everything implode first.”
