YONKERS, NY – Today, New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman announced that he will be endorsing current New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi in her bid for Congress in New York’s 3rd Congressional District.
After her historic primary victory in 2018, unseating IDC leader Jeff Klein, Senator Biaggi has been a key progressive ally in Albany, championing causes such as expanded voting rights, protections for reproductive healthcare, affordable housing, and worker protections.
Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s endorsement comes just one day after Senator Biaggi announced her congressional run and makes Rep. Bowman the first member of Congress to officially endorse Biaggi for this seat.
“I am proud to endorse Senator Biaggi in her run for Congress,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman. “Senator Biaggi leads with relentless compassion. She’s smart, bold, principled, hard-working, and most importantly, loves people. She is a champion for women’s rights and the working class, and her countless victories in the State Senate show that she truly understands the urgency of this moment. As a member of Congress, I am working hard to build a nation that works for everyone, not just the privileged class, and I have full confidence Senator Biaggi, with her tireless advocacy, is looking to do the same. I look forward to Senator Biaggi joining me in DC so together we can continue to fight for working New Yorkers and for a society that embodies the ideals of justice, equality, and solidarity.”
“I am thrilled and incredibly grateful to receive Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s endorsement. I have the privilege of serving several communities in tandem with the Congressman, and I have learned so much from his leadership. Congressman Bowman is a champion for working families. He possesses an admirable commitment to strengthening New York’s public education and ensuring teachers and students have the resources they need, regardless of zip code. It is an honor to be Congressman Bowman’s friend and colleague, and I look forward to taking our partnership to the halls of Congress,” said Senator Alessandra Biaggi.
Senator Alessandra Biaggi is a 35-year-old progressive who currently represents parts of the Bronx and Westchester. Senator Biaggi has stood side-by-side with Congressman Jamaal Bowman on a number of local issues, including on a call to address gun violence, end the opioid epidemic, and put an end to antisemitic vandalism and assaults against Synagogues in the Bronx.
Congressman Jamaal Bowman was an educator and advocate for public schools for over 20 years and previously served as principal for the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA), a public middle school he founded in 2009 in the Baychester neighborhood of The Bronx. Rep. Bowman is a life-long New Yorker who lives in Yonkers with his wife and children.
