Cordell Cleare, District Leader and Candidate for New York City Council District 9, has received an outpouring of support for her candidacy. After her decades of work in Harlem, including as a tenant organizer, environmental justice activist, and president of her Community Education Council, some of New York City’s top grassroots and community groups are now showing their appreciation by coming out in support of Cordell.
Cordell Cleare has earned the endorsements of the community groups New York League of Conservation Voters, NYC Kids PAC, Tenant PAC, Met Council, Make the Road Action, Community Voices Heard, 1199SEIU, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Danni Pat Tyson of Ownership Within Reach, District Leader Paula Diamond Roman, the Michelle Obama Community Democratic Club, and New York Amsterdam News.
“Cordell Cleare has consistently fought for change in her district and citywide, while providing bold leadership on tough issues like childhood lead poisoning and standing up against major developers,” said Public Advocate Jumaane Williams. “She has been a true voice for the people and will continue to bring strong leadership to Harlem. That’s why I am proud to endorse her for New York City Council.”
Small Business Owner, Danni Pat Tyson of Ownership Within Reach added, “I’m a real estate broker, and a 30 plus-year resident of Harlem. Through the years, community activist Cordell Cleare has consistently supported Harlem. When realtors made SoHa the next neighborhood on their self-drawn map, I wasn’t going to allow it. Cordell was one of the first to step up to support my cause. She used her voice to bring together the community, politicians, movers and shakers to put a stop to SoHa. Much thanks to Cordell for stopping the erasure of Harlem.”
“I am overjoyed at the profuse support I have received from the community,” said Cleare. “I am so proud that they trust me to serve them in the City Council. I look forward to proving them right as the next Council Member for District 9.”
Cordell Cleare is a Harlemite, experienced legislator, activist and organizer who wants to represent you in the neighborhood she has served with the utmost commitment for decades. Cordell’s activism began as a tenant organizer and as Chair of the New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning, where she fought hard to protect our children from the life threatening dangers of lead paint. For nearly two decades, she tirelessly served our community as Chief of Staff to Bill Perkins during his tenures in both the City Council and State Senate.
A co-founder of the Michelle Obama Democratic Club, she has represented us for many terms as our Democratic District Leader in Assembly District 68 and now in Assembly District 70. Previously, Cordell served as a member and then president of School Board 3 and also became President of Community Education Council (CEC) #3.
Cordell was raised in Harlem and has lived there with four generations of her family. She is a product of the New York City public school system and has stood up on issues like food, environmental and racial justice. Cordell will work to create fairness in housing, education, healthcare and equitable distribution of business opportunities, income equality and creating more Black wealth. She is dedicated to preserving our families by focusing on job creation, career readiness, ending gun violence in our streets and domestic violence in our homes. As our next Council Member, Cordell Cleare will continue to provide our community and our families with the fearless leadership and bold solutions we deserve.
