The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization in the nation, today encouraged Americans Muslims and others concerned about the ongoing Gaza genocide to contact their U.S. senators and encourage them to support Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ 502B(c) Resolution calling on the State Department to report on any Israeli military human rights violations in Gaza.

Senator Sanders’ resolution would require the State Department to research and report on violations of internationally recognized human rights due to indiscriminate or disproportionate military actions, the denial of basic humanitarian needs, and steps taken to mitigate civilian risks. Additionally, the resolution seeks a certification regarding Israeli security forces’ compliance with human rights standards, a summary of arms supplied to Israel since October 7, and an assessment of Israel’s adherence to international humanitarian law in Gaza.

Sanders stated on the U.S. Senate floor: “In essence, we will be voting on a very simple question: Do you support asking the State Department whether human rights violations may have occurred using U.S. equipment or assistance in this war? This resolution is not prescriptive—it does not alter aid to Israel in any way. It simply requests that the State Department report on how our aid is being used.”

In a statement, CAIR’s Director of Government Affairs Department Robert McCaw said:

“We call on every American who cares about human rights to urge their U.S. senators to support Senator Sanders’ call for an assessment of any human rights violations the Israeli government has committed with weapons provided by American taxpayer dollars. This the very least the Senate should do in response to what even President Biden has reportedly described as the Israeli government’s ‘indiscriminate bombing’ of Gaza, which has killed over 24,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. It is imperative that the United States starts upholding the rule of law. As a nation, we must reach out to our senators, mobilize our communities, and urge their support for Senate Resolution 502B(c).”
