Actor Charles Dutton is slated to star in an Opening Night Reading of “Paradigm Shift,” as part of the 5th POTPOURRI! World Women’s Work Series at The Dwyer Cultural Center in Harlem on Monday, March 10th. Directed by Passion and written by playwright, Sabura Rashid, the production is being presented by Kim Weston Moran’s Ryhtum Color Associates in association with Voza Rivers of the New Heritage Theatre Group. Also featured are Atiba Ermina, Antonio Woodard and Colette Bryce.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, actor/producer, Charles Dutton is best known for his portrayal of “Roc” in the television sitcom but he is also known for his stage work. He appeared on Broadway in Piano Lesson and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The Tony nominated performer and Theater Award winner has appeared in films such as: Alien 3, Rudy, Gothika, Get on the Bus, A Time to Kill, Cookie’s Fortune, Crocodile Dundee II, Cry, the Beloved Country; Menace II Society and Secret Window. In 2000, Dutton directed the HBO miniseries “The Corner.” The Corner won several Emmys in 2000, including Best Miniseries. Dutton won for his direction of the miniseries. He cut a deal with HBO in 2007 to develop, direct and star in a series and movies for the network. He appeared in the film Honeydrippers that same year.
The 5th POTPOURRI! World Women Works Series, returns for its 5th Season on March 10th and runs until March 30th. The focus of the 5th Potpourri World Women Works Series is to feature women playwrights from local and global communities. This year the series will feature Sabura Rashid’s three plays; a fusion performance piece for ages 13 years and up; an afternoon of short plays and screenplays in celebration of Swan Day; conversations with phenomenal Women – Fame Changers moderated by Flo Wiley; a Cabaret closing night, featuring a few Eclectic Ladies in Comedy hosted by Comedienne and sitcom actress, Mariann Alda; “Past Perfect” by Joyce Walker Joseph; and a full length play previously read will be revisited under the umbrella Ready for Off-Broadway. For the World Women’s Work series, Mr. Dutton will be reading the role of Jeffrey “Lumumba” Gaines wherein radical politics, student protests and revenge happen on the campus of an urban Commuter college. Interested parties can catch Dutton’s reading at the Dwyer Cultural Center, located at 258 St. Nicholas Avenue in Manhattan. The reading begins at 7:15 pm with a Q&A session afterwards led by scholar Rashidah Akbar-Ismali. Seating is limited, so get your ticket early.
