Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage is kicking off its first full week of programming with a diverse set of shows taking place in Central Park and Coney Island. For the most up-to-date scheduling and lineup for all SummerStage programming, visit www.SummerStage.org for all festival information.
On Saturday, June 1st, long time Lower East Side resident Emily King will perform in Central Park. A child of musicians, Emily King dropped out of school at 16 and cut her teeth at local haunts CBGB and The Bitter End. In the fifteen years since she signed her first record deal with Clive Davis’ J Records, her distinct brand of soulful R&B has been nominated for a Grammy and led to collaborations and performances with Nas, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Chaka Khan and Erykah Badu. Her most recent album Scenery was released earlier this year, and was dubbed a “sweeping coming-of-age tale” by NPR. She’s joined by Durand Jones and the Indications, a soul group with a throwback sound that channels the likes of Jackie Wilson and Curtis Mayfield, Brooklyn singer-songwriter, Madison McFerrin, daughter of jazz legend Bobby McFerrin and sister to SummerStage alum Taylor McFerrin, and DJ Reborn. Doors open at 6 PM and the show will kick off at 6:30 PM. This is a free show.
On Tuesday, June 4, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic will be performing a show in Central Park. They will visit NYC for the final time on a nationwide tour in which they have been playing the classic 1978 Funkadelic album One Nation Under a Groove in full. They will be joined by music descendants of different branches; So-Cal punk pioneers Fishbone, and the sprawling funk ensembles Galactic – known for their raucous collaborations with N.O. mainstays Juvenile, Big Freedia, and Trombone Shorty-and Dumpstaphunk, led by Aaron Neville’s son Ivan, and Miss Velvet. This show is presented by Sony Presents Blue Note Jazz Festival. Doors open at 5 PM and the show kicks off at 6 PM. Tickets are $85.
One Saturday, June 8, Parquet Courts will perform a free show in Central Park. The Brooklyn pioneers have long provided a contemporary perspective on a vintage aesthetic, their restless spirit consistently forcing their core punk aesthetic to break new ground. Their latest LP, 2018’s Danger Mouse-produced Wide Awake!, further evidences an adeptness at finding new ways to keep rock music interesting. The boys are joined by the Japanese cult hero Sachiko Kanenobu. She has only recently begun performing her 1972 debut Misora, which channels Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan with a tenderness to rival the folk legends. Additional openers include ARP, the breezy, psych-rock project of Brooklyn-based DJ & producer Alexis Georgopoulos, and Prince of Queens. Doors open at 6 PM and the show kicks off at 7 PM. This is a free show.
On Monday, June 10, Metropolitan Opera stars Ying Fang, Ben Bliss and Nathan Gunn will perform an evening of arias and duets from some of opera’s most beloved works in Central Park. Since its first performances in 1883, the Metropolitan Opera has been one of the world’s leading arts institutions, presenting more than 200 spectacular performances each year. As part of the Met’s ongoing efforts to nurture a new audience for opera throughout New York City, the company will again present its popular series of summer concerts in all five boroughs. The 11th season of free recitals begins on Monday, June 10, at SummerStage in Central Park, with an evening of arias and duets. The first two recitals feature audience favorites Nathan Gunn, Ben Bliss, and Ying Fang, while the four subsequent recitals showcase three exciting young artists-Leah Hawkins, Mario Bahg, and Joseph Lim. Members of the Met music staff will be at the piano to accompany each performance. Doors open at 7 PM and the performance kicks off at 8 PM. This is a free show.
On Tuesday, June 11, Trinidadian group Kes the Band will take the stage at Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk. Led by the three Dieffenthaller brothers and their friend Riad Boochoon, Kes wields island rhythms with a reggae and soca heart and calypso melodies. They will be joined by Jamaican dancehall artist Shenseea, along with Sounds 4 Life and Max Glazer. This free show will take place at 7 PM.
