Donald Trump is attacking Canada because the country’s prime minister announced that it would recognize a Palestinian state, following similar pronouncements recently by several countries including France and the United Kingdom.

Canada’s said their recognition would be contingent on Palestinians holding elections without Hamas. Canada said it would formally recognize the Palestinian state in September, at the UN General Assembly, in New York.

On Wednesday, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke about the plight of Palestinians taking place in Gaza.

“The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable…The deepening suffering of civilians leaves no room for delaying coordinated international action to support peace, security and the dignity of human life.”

Trump reacted to Carney’s comments, on Truth Social, by saying, “Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them.”

Trump is preparing to hit Canada with a 35 percent tariff on Canadian products not protected by the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, if an agreement is not reached before Aug.1st.

Trump has been parroting the Israeli government’s propaganda that recognizing a Palestinian state “is rewarding terrorists” and “rewarding Hamas.”
