California Democrats are considering their own gerrymandering scheme to counter the plot by Donald Trump and Texas Republicans to create five new Congressional seats in Texas, as we approach the 2026 mid-term Elections.

Reportedly, California Democrats are now taking a behind-closed-doors look at how they can weaken Republican districts. Their objective: to create five new seats, in California, for Congressional Democrats, as Texas Republicans are attempting to do, albeit with difficulty, since Texas Democrats have fled Texas to deny Texas Republicans a quorum.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is said to be looking at a special election during which he will ask California voters to temporarily give Democrats the power to redraw California’s Congressional maps. Newsom has stated the move would be to counter the attempt by Trump and Texas Republicans to rig the Texas maps in their favor for 2026.

California Rep. Zoe Lofgren said there must be a response to Trump’s attempt to weaken the Congressional power of Democrats.

“Trump wants to change the rules so he can continue to use the full power of the federal government to punish California with zero congressional oversight,” Rep. Lofgren. “If these GOP mid-decade redistricting efforts do come to pass, our congressional delegation stands ready to work with our state legislative partners to respond. We will fight back.”

In 2008, the voters of California took the power away for drawing maps from state legislators and gave it to an independent redistricting body. Newsome will be asking voters to temporarily suspend this independent redistricting commission because of the actions of Texas Republicans.

California Republicans are alarmed by the prospect of Democrats redrawing the maps to weaken Republican power in California.

Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley announced plans to introduce a bill, in Congress, to block the efforts of California Democrats. Kiley attacked Newsom and California Democrats in a statement saying, “Gavin Newsom is trying to subvert the will of voters and do lasting damage to democracy in California. Fortunately, Congress has the ability to protect California voters using its authority under the Elections Clause of the U.S. Constitution. This will also stop a damaging redistricting war from breaking out across the country.”

If Kiley’s bill is passed, it may thwart Democrats from doing the very same redistricting tactics that Texas Republicans are trying to do.

California Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur explained why California Democrats may respond with their own redistricting rigging saying, “The polling shows that Californians overwhelmingly reject Trump’s blatant power grab in Texas and want to fight back. The basic components of the program we are considering has strong support.”
