The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Biden administration to uphold the United Nations Security Council resolution passed earlier today demanding an immediate cease-fire in the far-right Israeli government’s genocide in Gaza by ending U.S. weapons transfers to Israel.

Fourteen Security Council members voted in favor of the resolution, while the United States abstained.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

“The Biden administration’s long overdue decision to permit the passage of a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire will only be impactful if our government takes concrete steps to support it. The far-right Netanyahu government is already flouting the resolution and promising to continue its genocide in Gaza. The Biden administration should respond by ending the transfer of any new weapons to the Israeli government and taking steps to pursue a just, lasting peace.

“Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid must be removed. The siege of Gaza must be lifted and those forced from their homes must be allowed to return. All political prisoners and hostages must be freed. Gaza must be rebuilt. The Israeli government must be held accountable for its crimes. The state of Palestine must be recognized among the community of nations.

“We thank the millions of activists who exerted pressure on the Biden administration over the months not to block the United Nations’ efforts to stop the genocide of the Palestinians. We need to keep up the pressure. It’s working.”
