(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/29/25) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, Saturday condemned an executive order signed by President Trump that seeks to remove “improper ideology” from federal sites and allows the nationwide return of monuments honoring the traitorous and white supremacist Confederacy.

Associated Press stated: “Critics argued the order is the latest move by the Trump administration to quash recognition of Black Americans’ contributions to the nation and to gloss over the legal, political, social and economic obstacles they have faced.”

CAIR expressed concern that the order would allow inappropriate government interference in the operations of institutions such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

President Trump signed an executive order, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity in America,” to eliminate “anti-American ideology” from the nation’s cultural institutions. The order prohibits funding for exhibits or programs that “degrade shared American values, divide Americans by race, or promote ideologies inconsistent with Federal law.”
People reports: “Trump’s order specifically calls out the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the American Women’s History Museum for featuring exhibits aimed at ‘ideological indoctrination or divisive narratives that distort our shared history.’”
It also orders the Secretary of Interior is to “determine whether, since January 1, 2020, public monuments, memorials, statues, markers, or similar properties within the Department of the Interior’s jurisdiction have been removed or changed to perpetuate a false reconstruction of American history, inappropriately minimize the value of certain historical events or figures, or include any other improper partisan ideology.”
“It is shameful that any American leader would seek to whitewash our nation’s history and to again honor and uplift the traitorous and white supremacist Confederacy or to impose white nationalist ideology on federal institutions,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “This misguided effort smacks of the imposed ideologies we see – and have seen – in authoritarian regimes around the world and throughout history.”
He noted that earlier this month, CAIR decried a reported change by the Trump administration to no longer explicitly prohibit federal government contractors from having “segregated facilities” such as restaurants, waiting rooms and drinking fountains.
Hooper said Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
