The Garvey School, newly situated at 3950 Bronxwood Avenue in the Bronx, is poised to continue its mission as a premier institution of academic superiority that is culturally responsive.

Founded by Jamaican educator June O’Connor and named after Jamaica’s first national hero, Marcus Garvey, the school currently serves two-year-olds, and Pre-K up to Grade 8. Since opening its doors in 2009, the Garvey School has served over 7000 students and placed approximately 90 per cent of its graduates comfortably in gifted programs and competitive independent schools. Ms. O’Connor was spurred into action when she recognized the embedded inequities in the school system around the time her daughter was set to enter kindergarten.  “A paradigm shift in education must take place to ensure our children are exposed to honest curriculum content as well as equal and affordable access to quality education” according to Ma. O’Connor.

The Garvey School experience cultivates resilience and nurtures each child’s uniqueness through STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) Program. Strong emphasis is placed on Earth care and community service. Giving back to the community begins in early grades as our children connect with children in temporary housing, and in the process help them to develop an intimate feeling of belonging within the community and an obligation to ‘give back’. The aim is to reduce and eventually eliminate the early brain drain from marginalized communities.

“Underserved communities on the battlegrounds of the education dilemma can be transformed, when we put in the work—and the championship of communities and supporters is critical to our successful efforts,” said June O’Connor, Founder and Executive Director. “To ensure robust and dynamic engagement, our goal is to support communities  through culturally responsive learning and wellness education. That’s the ultimate experience of quality education.”

Garvey School is proud to launch its building fund campaign as we shift paradigm in education and create a secure space for our students.  With a target of raising 600,000, the first phase of the campaign kicks off on June 26, 2024 through June 26, 2025. Please support our first fundraiser on June 26, 2024 and join our campaign to educate our children.
