First Deputy Police Commissioner Benjamin Tucker will be given the inaugural Samuel Battle Trailblazer Award at Bronx Community College tomorrow.

On Tuesday, February 25, prominent New Yorkers who have devoted their lives to the pursuit of justice will be on hand for a major event in Bronx Community College’s observance of this year’s Black History Month: A Tribute to African-American Leaders in the Criminal Justice Profession.

Organized by BCC’s Criminal Justice Program, the evening will include the establishment of two new awards.

New York State court officer Major Earnest Owens will be the first recipient of the Captain William Harry Thompson Award, created in honor of the New York State court officer who perished on September 11, 2001. First Deputy Police Commissioner Benjamin Tucker will be given the inaugural Samuel Battle Trailblazer Award, named for the first African-American appointed to the New York City Police Department.

Other honorees of the evening will include the Honorable Valerie Braithwaite-Nelson, Associate Justice, New York State Court Appellate Division; the Honorable J. Machelle Sweeting, Justice, New York State Supreme Court; the Honorable Vanessa Gibson, NYC Councilwoman; the Honorable Otis Cruise, Commissioner Board of Parole, New York State Corrections and Community Supervision; Lt. Mary Faison-Cobham of Bronx Community College’s Public Safety department; Captain Keiyon S. Ramsey and Detective Yuseff Hamm of the New York City Police Department; and Mr. Larry Davis, retired Chief of the New York City Department of Corrections.
