Deputy British High Commissioner to Uganda, Mary Shockledge, graced the inaugural Mini-Soccer tournament sponsored by British Airways.
Shockledge commended the participating teams; the organizers and the general spirit exhibited throughout the tournament.
Coca-Cola emerged winners of the inaugural Mini-soccer tournament; Flying Start, a British Airways global Charity together with the UK-based Comic Relief. In a Sunday final; Coca Cola defeated Africa Air Rescue (AAR) with 5-4 penalties after a stalemate entertaining full time.
Flying Start, a British Airways Charity, alongside Comic Relief, partnered with corporate companies in Uganda to raise the money for helping underprivileged children in Uganda and other parts of the world. According to the BA Country Manager, Faith Chaitezvi, the tournament becomes an annual event on the corporate league calendar. It will be used to raise funds that go to children’s projects in all destinations where BA operates.
Previously, BA sponsored projects in Uganda include a mosquito nets project in Hoima district-124 miles north-west of capital Kampala. BA donated thousand of mosquito nets to areas affected by malaria and sponsored a vaccination program in Kawempe a suburb, which is 10 miles north of the capital –Kampala.
The mini tournament was held last Sunday at Kyadondo Rugby Club, Lugogo-Kampala. It featured most of Uganda’s top corporate teams.
Other tournament recognitions; Civicon, emerged the 2nd Runners up, Tullow’s Joyce Nambusi was recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player and best female player of the tournament. Nambusi received a certificate of recognition and gift from ENVIRI salon.
Civicon’s James Mubiru was recognized best male player and received a certificate of recognition and a gift from Kampala Serena Hotel.
The 24 participating teams were: DFCU, Spedag, Hima Cement Industries, WBS TV, MUBS University, British Airways, AAR, NIKO Insurance, G4S and Makerere University. Others Corporate 11, Lion Assurance, Net Money, Tullow oil, SSL Logistics, CIVICON, UCDA, Cocacola, Volcano, Safaris, Balton, Audle and Orient Bank.
