Glam Con Events, in partnership with the Pink Peppermint Project, will host a virtual event Saturday, October 10 to honor, celebrate, and encourage African-American women who are breast cancer survivors.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“With the surge of the Black Lives Matter movement, we felt it necessary to not only celebrate African-American women who have survived breast cancer, but to also empower, educate, advocate for, and support African-American women affected by breast cancer, their caregivers, and friends,” said ShantaQuilette Carter, CEO and Founder of the Pink Peppermint Project. “This disease has been somewhat of a ‘silent killer’ with the African-American community, and we want to do all we can to reduce the high rates of diagnosis.”

While African-American women make up only 7% of the U.S. population, they make up nearly one-third (31%) of all breast cancer diagnoses. Over the past 20 years, despite the universal drop in mortality rates, we have seen a rise in the incidence of breast cancer in African-American women. In particular, disparities between mortality rates for white and Black women have grown significantly. The mortality rate for Black women diagnosed with breast cancer is 42% higher than the comparable rate for white women.

Among guest speakers for the event will be:

  • Dr. Jessica Shepherd, Ob/GYN, Renown women’s health expert, she has appeared as a guest on the Dr. Oz show
  • Dr. Noelle Reid, Family practice physician and former cast member of ‘Married to Medicine LA’
  • Cordelia Gaffar, Published author, speaker, and certified in Sports Nutrition
  • Michelle Lamont, Manifestation Coach, speaker
