Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused, by Brazilian police, of attempting to flee to Argentina, to seek political asylum—while his trial, for allegedly plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election, is still in progress.

The Brazilian police say they found a document that shows the former president “planned to flee the country, in order to prevent the law being enforced.”
Bolsonaro’s faces 40 years in prison if convicted in this trial. However, it is now reported that he, and his son, Eduardo, a member of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, face new charges of obstruction of justice, related to the ongoing trial. The former Brazilian president has also been accused of not abiding by the terms of his house confinement.
Wednesday, court documents were publicized which show federal police found a draft asylum letter, purportedly written by Bolsanaro, to Argentina’s right-wing President Javier Milei, whose inauguration, Bolsonaro attended in December, 2023.
Brazilian Judge Alexandre de Moraes has given Bolsonora 48 hours to explain why he was attempting to go to Argentina. In referencing a 170-page police report, the judge told Bolsonora’s lawyers that “The evidence gathered by the federal police indicate that Jair Messias Bolsonaro was in possession of a document designed to enable him to escape national territory.”
In part of the draft letter, Bolsonora allegedly wrote: “I, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, request political asylum from Your Excellency in the Republic of Argentina, under an urgent regime, as I find myself in a situation of political persecution in Brazil and fear for my life.”
Brazilian police also accusing Bolsonaro, and his son, of trying to subvert Brazilian justice by lobbying the Trump Administration for help. They claim to have evidence showing the father and son decided on a strategy of heaping praise on Trump, in hopes that Trump could affect a positive outcome in Bolsonaro’s trial.
In July, Trump hammered Brazil with 50 percent tariffs on their exports and called the prosecution of Bolsonaro a “witch-hunt.” Last week, Trump said of the case, “It’s really a political execution that they’re trying to do with Bolsonaro. I think that’s terrible.”
However, Bolsonaro’s son was apparently worried that Trump’s influence would not change the legal outcome in his father’s favor. In one of the messages obtained by Brazilian police, Eduardo, who is in America, told his father “You won’t have time to reverse the situation if the guy [Trump] here turns his back on you. Everything here is very touchy, every little thing affects you…I’m afraid things will change here (in the United States). Even inside the White House, there are people telling (Trump): ‘OK, Brazil is gone. Let’s move on’.”
The final phase of Bolsonaro’s current trial is set to start on September 2. The former president, who was in power from 2019 until 2022, may now possibly be jailed for the remainder of the trial. Bolsonora also allegedly planned to assassinate current President Lula da Silva.
