King James, 1566 – 1625, is one of the most famous names in history. His reign left a lasting impact on humanity made possible by his Authorized Version of the bible, the “King James Version.” As a protestant king of England his ambition was to expand Protestantism similar to the Catholics expansion. His mother, who ruled before him, Queen Mary, was a zealous Catholic who slaughtered many to prevent the rise of Protestantism in England thus earning the infamous nick name “Bloody Mary”.
She was also a suspect in the death of her husband and father of James, Lord Darnley, who was killed when thirty barrels of gun powder was placed under his bedroom cellar in what is now known as, “The Gun Powder Plot.” The murder remains “one of history’s most notorious unsolved crimes.” The same plot used to kill him was also used in an attempt on the life of his son, the future King James (Britishheritage.com/the-murder-of-lord-darnley.)
The delusion of seeing savagery in others but not in ourselves is a common hypocrisy but if the King reflected on his own history he would have been able to avoid the self-righteous narcissism that seem to have brought us to this apology in the first place. George M. Fredrickson described the British colonial attitude to aboriginal people by saying that the white supremacist attitude of the English was that the native was a savage, beastly uncivilized creature and hopelessly lost in his savage ways but with the propagation of the gospel he might be saved. “The official and orthodox view seemed, on the surface at least, to be clear and equivocal, the Christianization and civilization of native people, however “wild” and savage they can be, was not only deemed possible but was enjoined on colonizers as a positive duty”. –

`James, son of Mary, was not only king but head of the Church of England and the one who authorized a compilation of the 66 books called the King James Bible, said to be the most widely read book in history.
When King James published the bible in 1611, he was already an owner of African slaves. The first English settlement in Virginia was established in 1607 and named after the reigning King of England: Jamestown, in the state of Virginia.
The previous year the King granted, “The First Charter of Virginia; April 10, 1606. JAMES, by the Grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, We, greatly commending, and graciously accepting of, their Desires for the Furtherance of so noble a Work, which may, by the Providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the Glory of his Divine Majesty, in propagating of Christian Religion to such People, as yet live in Darkness and miserable Ignorance of the true Knowledge and Worship of God, and may in time bring the Infidels and Savages, living in those parts, to human Civility, and to a settled and quiet Government: DO, by these our Letters Patents, graciously accept of, and agree to, their humble and well-intended Desires.” http://avalon.law.yale.edu/17th_century/va01.asp
This presentation reflects much of the conversation about slavery in America today with questions about the aftermath, residue of social, political, religious and economic issues left from a project started by the Royal Family of England and the legacy of delusional racist beliefs resulting from their colonial policy of exclusivity and exploitation. King James I, it could be said was the architect of what is now studied as , The 1619 Project, slave trading objectives as a traditional business model initiated by James I and practiced by the Royal Family, while being head of the Church of England and the authorizer of the King James Version of the “Holy Bible.”
