The African American Mayors Association (AAMA) and Smart Surfaces Coalition (SSC) have announced a new collaborative partnership to persuade Black mayors to enact valuable climate response strategies in their cities.

AAMA is the only organization that exclusively represents African American mayors in America. The partnership between AAMA and SSC was fused because both groups are concerned about the particularly harmful impacts of climate change on American cities.

SSC is a combined consortium of 40 environmental and industry organizations that are disturbed by the growing public health and safety dangers of global warming in communities that are still battling racism, redlining, and public policies that are unequal.

The current president of the AAMA spoke about the new partnership.

“As mayors leading some of the nation’s largest cities, we face urgent and far-reaching challenges every day—and climate resilience is a critical thread running through them all,” said Mayor Van R. Johnson II, President of the African American Mayors Association. “This new partnership marks an important step forward for our member cities and the people we serve, as we collaborate on innovative approaches that protect public funds while boosting community well-being, safety, and economic growth.”

The founder of the Smart Surfaces Coalition released a statement on their collaboration with AAMA.

“When smart surface solutions are deployed in distressed communities, residents are not only relieved by cooler conditions, but they experience better health, better academic outcomes, dramatic reductions in crime, and tremendous opportunities to create small businesses and jobs,” said Greg Kats, Smart Surfaces Coalition founder and CEO. “This is perfect synergy between two organizations passionately focused on helping populations in desperate need of better outcomes.”
