Today, during the sentencing of Payton Gendron, a Black male family member of one of the ten people killed on May 14, 2022, by Gendron, at the Tops Supermarket in Buffalo, New York, had to be restrained by several court officers after he attempted to attack Gendron during jury impact statements.
Gendron had to be rushed to safety, while the male family member was restrained, and court order was restored after ten minutes.
“You don’t know what we’re going through,” the man said as he was removed from the courtroom.
The name of the family member is not yet known–though the man was standing next to Barbara Massey Mapps, who was giving an angry impact statement on the killing of her sister 72-year-old sister Katherine Massey.
Gendron, who was sentenced to life, claimed he was sorry for his murderous racist actions.
“I’m very sorry for all the pain I forced the victims and their families to suffer through. I’m very sorry for stealing the lives of your loved ones. I cannot express how much I regret all the decisions I made leading up to my actions on May 14,” Gendron said. “I did a terrible thing that day. I shot and killed people because they were Black.”
