NEW YORK, NY – Acclaimed actor and filmmaker Edwin Freeman recently launched his 8-week “Hip Hop Anthropology” course at Innovation Charter High School in Harlem. The course, developed in partnership with Cultural Collaborative Jamaica Executive Director Tyra Emerson, will travel to various high schools throughout New York City during this school year.

The kickoff event featured a screening of Freeman’s documentary “Beats & Lyrics: The Essence of Rap” followed by a Q&A session hosted by Innovation Charter’s filmmaking instructor Frank Bold. Students engaged with Freeman by preparing and conducting their own interviews about the film industry.

Freeman’s appearance allowed the students to connect with an experienced creative professional while deepening their appreciation of rap music as an impactful cultural artform. The course itself will explore the rich history, culture and influence of hip hop over time. It aims to provide students with internship opportunities and expose them to potential careers within the industry beyond just performance.

Tyra Emerson shared, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Mr. Freeman to bring this immersive hip hop experience to New York youth. The course highlights the diversity of roles available within the culture. Our goal is to empower students to see themselves making meaningful contributions through hip hop.”

Programs like those offered by Bold Art Society demonstrate Innovation Charter High School’s commitment to developing well-rounded individuals poised for success. The Cultural Collaborative Jamaica applauds them for facilitating this enriching opportunity.
