New York, New York –  In response to the recent executive action announced by President Biden, we at AfroResistance vehemently oppose this regressive measure that echoes the inhumanity of Arizona’s SB 1070.

This executive order, which leverages the authority under “212(f),” starkly demonstrates the country’s ongoing disregard for the humanity of people and directly violates the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. It represents a significant step backward from the principles of human rights and compassionate immigration policy.

President Biden’s embrace of failed Republican policies is a grave mistake that underscores a profound disconnect from the lived experiences of migrants and a disturbing commitment to capitalism and neoliberalism over human rights. These flawed border policies result in broken lives and shattered communities, revealing a failed humanity at the core of our immigration approach. There is a better way. Rather than playing politics with people’s lives, the President should ground his actions in international law, progressive migration policies, and a feminist economy. These principles lay the foundation for how migration and politics could and should operate for the benefit of all, not just a privileged few,” said Janvieve Williams Comrie, Executive Director of AfroResistance.

Much like SB 1070, which was widely condemned for its racial profiling and harsh treatment of immigrants, this new executive action prioritizes political expediency over human dignity. It threatens to severely restrict the ability of migrants to seek asylum, a fundamental human right, simply based on their manner of entry once daily encounters exceed 2,500. This punitive approach mirrors the draconian measures of Title 42 and ignores the root causes of migration, perpetuating a cycle of suffering and instability.

Our advocacy is rooted in the belief that every individual has the right to seek safety and a better life. To promote human rights, democracy, solidarity and justice for Black people across the Americas. We stand in solidarity with immigrant communities and demand that the Biden administration rescind this executive order immediately. Instead of turning away migrants and sowing fear, we call on the administration to implement humane and practical solutions that uphold the values of justice and compassion.
