Tuesday, Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Jamaal Bowman in the NY-16 Democratic primary, throwing his support behind the surging progressive challenger in the upcoming election on June 23rd.

One of the biggest endorsements in Democratic politics, Senator Sanders’ support is the latest sign that the momentum in this race is with Jamaal Bowman.

“Jamaal Bowman is a public school teacher and principal in the Bronx who is running for the U.S. House in New York’s 16th District to unseat a 16-term incumbent Democrat,” said Senator Bernie Sanders. “Jamaal understands that low-income families are locked out of opportunity and a decent life due to a system that is rigged to benefit the wealthy. In Congress he will lead the fight for investing in our public schools, ending mass incarceration, and addressing the housing crisis. He is someone we can trust to be a powerful advocate for a progressive agenda in Congress.”

“I am deeply honored to have the endorsement of Senator Sanders, someone who has been fighting for civil rights, racial and economic justice and on behalf of working people for his entire life,” said Jamaal Bowman. “Bernie is not just a leader of our party, but the leader of a movement. He led the way for the kind of campaign we’re running here in NY-16 – one fueled by small-dollar, grassroots donors, not corporate and lobbyist money. This is such a validation of the hard work of our grassroots campaign.”

In the last week, Jamaal Bowman has also been endorsed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, State Senator Alessandra Biaggi, State Senator Gustavo Rivera, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer, and New York City Councilman Brad Lander. In addition, Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Our Revolution, and Citizen Action also recently announced their support for Jamaal.
